Cattle were rounded up on Oct 10 & 12 in the Cierra Hueco and Knoll's Pastures. Mother cows were checked for teeth and 11 cull cows and 76 calves were sent to auction in Dalhart, Texas. Unfortunately prices were down that particular day and so the calves sold for a high of $1.08/lb to a low of $0.88/lb for an overall average of $0.94. Their average weight was 488 lbs. The 11 cows averaged 1011 lbs and $.43/lb.
We kept 32 calves, some too young to ship and others due to lack of space on the cattle truck. We'll have a good number of yearlings next year. If our tally is correct we now have 118 mother cows and 8 bulls. Bulls are on Cecil's pasture and the rest of the cows are on Jennie's pasture.
Pictured is our new horse- Susie. That's the name she came with and so we kept it. She was not used to cattle and took a lot of work to get her into a run. Unfortunately winter is here and we can't keep working with her so we'll see how she does next season.
